Around 300‚000 customers – enough people to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground three times – have flown to/from the Victorian capital city since Bonza began servicing Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport.
Australia’s only independent low-cost carrier is marking one year since it began flying to/from its Melbourne base on March 30‚ 2023‚ which has seen customers travel to a growing number of destinations. Bonza currently serves 11 destinations to/from Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport‚ seven of those not served by any other carrier and nine of which have no other low-cost carrier operating them.
"We are delighted Melburnians have embraced our mission to connect more Aussies to their backyard than ever before as we continue to see strong growth across our Melbourne network‚” said Tim Jordan‚ Bonza CEO.
Many of our customers are first-time travellers‚ infrequent fliers and returning customers who are now able to connect directly to new and previously unserved or underserved destinations across our backyard because of our low-cost airfares‚ which is a big win for domestic tourism.
The Bonza Effect has had a positive impact for Melburnians and travellers to the city with Bonza’s presence saving Aussies travellers more than $100 million in its first year of operation to/from Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport‚ which illustrates how Bonza is democratising domestic air travel and bringing much needed change to the Australian aviation industry.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said that over the past year Bonza had delivered on its promise of low-cost flight connections for all Australians.
“As a brand-new airline‚ Bonza has really made a mark on Australia in just 12 short months. Along with growth in other states‚ it has expanded its network from nine routes to and from Melbourne to 11 routes‚ and many of these routes were underserved or didn’t exist at all‚” she said.
“Bonza has provided passengers with more affordable travel options and made it easier for Australians to connect with friends and family. We are immensely proud of the partnership we have developed with Bonza‚ and we look forward to their continued growth and success in the years to come.”
Notes to editor: When we compare the previously lowest available fares (Aug 2022) for the seven new markets we operate ex-MEL (Tamworth‚ Bundaberg‚ Toowoomba‚ Gladstone‚ Rockhampton‚ Mackay and Port Macquarie) versus the average Bonza fares we have seen on the same markets since we started operations (as at Sep 2023) the average difference is more than $200 each way or more than $400 round trip.
Bonza is Australia’s new and only independent low-cost airline enabling Australians to explore more of their own backyard for less. Bonza’s current route map includes 3 bases and 36 routes to 21 destinations with a focus on the unserved and underserved markets. Bonza is the first airline globally to take an app first approach with the only place to book direct being the Fly Bonza App. The airline was also the first globally to introduce a gender-neutral ‘wear it your way’ uniform including custom Bonza sneakers. Bonza’s all Aussie menu is the first onboard menu to be 100% sourced locally and is ordered on-demand from the Fly Bonza app meaning there are no trolleys to be seen onboard.
